Frequently asked questions...

How long will it take from order to delivery?
We aim to produce and send your bird box as soon as possible. Including delivery time you usually should receive it within 7 working days. At times of high demand your order may take up to 14 days. If the order is a gift or is urgent then please tell us and we will do our best to accommodate you.

How long will it take for a bird to use my box?
A tricky question as you can't force a bird to nest! A bird may well use your box in the first nesting season, but nobody can offer a guarantee when and where birds will nest!

Where should I site my new bird box?
You should site your new bird box between two and four metres from the ground on a suitable building or tree. Boxes should be securely fitted on a north to south-east facing aspect to avoid harsh sunlight and inclement weather. Boxes placed under the eaves of houses or outbuildings will attract house sparrows.

Do I need to clean my bird box?
We suggest cleaning your bird box out after each season's use, typically anytime after August. Remove the roof of your bird box, dispose of any unhatched eggs and remove the nest, as it will harbour bacteria, which could affect the following year's young. Carefully clean the box with boiling water, taking care to avoid contact with camera. Allow the box to thoroughly dry before re-attaching the roof and fixing back in place.

What is the quality of the picture and sound like?
The picture and sound of bird boxes will depend on the resolution of the camera and whether it has LEDs fitted. Generally speaking the higher the resolution (measured in TV Lines - TVL) the better the quality. Where cameras have LEDs fitted they also have an automatic switch-over at night time, when they will give black & white infra-red images inside the box, allowing you to watch and hear birds in their natural environment twenty-four hours a day! You could even leave your DVD or video recorder taping overnight to see how the birds behave while you sleep!

Having LEDs fitted will dampen the colours even during daylight, as Infra-red light responds differently to colours as normal visible light does.

For more details on choosing a camera for a nest box check out our blog post at http://www.birdboxcameras.co.uk/blog/2011/10/choosing-a-camera-for-your-nestbox-or-feeder/

Will I have to have external power to run the bird boxes?
No, the bird boxes are fitted with a 20 metre cable as a minimum (40 metres for some), the end of which has three leads - one power lead, and a two-pin AV lead, which plugs into most televisions, DVD / Video recorders.

I want to watch the bird box / bird feeder on my PC / Mac - is this possible?
Yes! You will need to purchase a Computer Capture Lead - we have one for a Mac and one for a Windows based PC / Laptop. The Computer Capture Lead comes with software to enable you to record / edit / share / take stills from the bird box / feeder
